Before your Korea trip

Your first cultural class: prepare three questions, not a speech.

Know what to check before you arrive, what to ask during a demonstration, and what to confirm before leaving.

Before the class: check the arrangements

Open the information from the provider you booked with. Look for the meeting point, start time, session language and anything you are asked to bring. Mark each item either "confirmed by provider" or "still a question." A general travel article cannot confirm those details for your booking.

If the teaching language is unclear, ask the provider before attending. A useful English planning question is: "Which language is the demonstration in, and what support is available if I do not understand?" Do not assume that an English booking page means every part of the activity will be taught in English.

During the class: choose the exact step

Make your practice task smaller than "understand everything." In the paper-craft example, it could be identifying the next fold and asking to see it once more. Point to your practice sheet so the listener knows which part you mean. Wait for an appropriate moment or use the question method the instructor has requested.

For language rehearsal, use harmless paper and an invented activity. Do not practice with sharp tools, heat or unfamiliar equipment. Actual activity instructions and any safety questions belong with the instructor; a prepared phrase is not a substitute for understanding them.

A three-question card and a six-minute rehearsal

  • Arrival: What detail do I still need from the provider before attending?
  • Demonstration: Which part would I ask to see or hear again?
  • Finish: What would I like to check before leaving, such as whether the practice sheet can be taken home?
  1. Minutes 1-2: Write one complete question under each heading in your strongest language. Do not invent the provider's answers.
  2. Minutes 3-4: Ask a partner to describe a simple paper fold in a language you share. Pause at one unclear step and ask them to show just that part again.
  3. Minutes 5-6: Explain which step is now clear and which is still uncertain. Then choose one question to prepare in Korean with a teacher.

Bring one communication need to a lesson

Tell your Korean teacher the type of class, your current level and the moment you want to rehearse. You do not need to send a booking reference or the instructor's private contact details. A specific brief might be: "I want to ask someone to demonstrate one step again and understand a short response."

Start with the free speaking sample if introducing yourself is still new. If an app will be part of your preparation, try the separate translation conversation check. These are language exercises, not confirmation that a class can accommodate your needs.

Prepare for the part you want to join in

Ask Ashley about Korean preparation for your chosen cultural activity. Describe the conversation you want help with; availability, scope and fee are discussed separately.
